CRISIS COMMUNICATION/PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER (PIO)

The Center's Crisis Communication courses are drawn from the CDC's Crisis and Emergency Risk Communication Course. Communicating during a crisis is different from communication efforts when things are "business as usual". People take in information, process it and act on it differently during a crisis. In addition, evidence indicates that the perception of an organization's response during a crisis is tied to how well they communicate during the crisis. The training offered by the Center helps those tasked with developing crisis communication messages and plans.

In 2008 and 2009, the Center offered training sessions covering the basic principles of crisis communication and elements of a crisis communication plan including a workbook. In 2010, the Center's crisis communication training will focus on a tabletop exercise specifically for the Public Information Officer function within Incident Command.
