Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Post Disaster Distress - Robin Zagurski, LCSW – University of Nebraska Medical Center Department of Psychiatry
This session is for licensed mental health providers only. Session content covers a manualized form of cognitive therapy targeted toward people recovering from major disasters or who are returning from military conflicts.

ICS 100, 200 for hospitals and IS 700 are presented in an interactive format with objectives reinforced with examples and exercises. The final test will be administered and graded at the end of the class.

Core Disaster Life Support - Leslie Scofield, BS NREMT-B – Regional Coordinator and Director of First Responder Education, Center for Biopreparedness Education
Core Disaster Life Support™ (CDLS™) is a four-hour awareness level course constructed around the DISASTER Paradigm™ and is designed to teach core concepts of disaster management. MASS Triage™ is taught to allow these providers to more effectively assist in the mitigation of the disaster and to assist in the process of triage.

The Omaha Police Department will be presenting an After Action Report to the public on the Westroads Mall shooting. This session will be based on that report and will be presented by in-person representatives in Sidney and Omaha.  

               Family Assistance Center in a Disaster - Dena Howard, Chief Programs Officer of the American Red Cross Heartland Chapter (Kearney and Norfolk)
The American Red Cross Heartland Center assisted the Omaha Police Department with a Family Assistance Center (FAC) during the response and recovery phases of the Westroads Mall shooting. This session will contrast the FAC for this incident with an FAC for a longer term event and will cover what services are typically provided.

Special Needs in Mass Fatalities: A View From the Morgue - Kenneth P. Hermsen, D.D.S., M.S., F.A.C.D. – Creighton University School of Dentistry 
Drawing on experiences from  9/11, Katrina and other events, this session will provide a point of view from the morgue in a mass fatality event. Cultural and other psycho-social considerations will be discussed.

The hemorrhagic fever viruses are a group of agents that include a number of contagious diseases with high mortality rates, such as Marburg, Ebola and Lassa fever.  While these diseases are found primarily in Africa, they have appeared in the US via international travelers, and are a bioterrorism threat.  We will review new developments in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of these agents.

When we ask whether we're really at risk from Avian Influenza, it’s easy to say yes there is certainly a risk.  More importantly, we need to understand how much risk and what are we doing to reduce it.  

 

Employment Law and Policy Issues in a Pandemic - Scott S. Moore JD - Baird Holm LLP
HR policies will need to "flex" in order to meet the unique demands of an avian influenza pandemic. This session will take a look at what HR policy issues need to be considered in planning for a pandemic.

This new training video, produced in partnership with Lincoln hospitals Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center, BryanLGH Health System, and the Veterans Administration Medical Center, provides practical answers to those questions.

In a disaster, healthcare providers may be forced to deal with altered standards of care. What legal issues with those standards present? The State's Deputy Chief Medical Officer will share information followed by a facilitated discussion among participants. This session will be an hour long presentation by Dr. Acierno followed by a facilitated discussion among attendees about the issues related to alternate standards of care.

 Evidence Preservation in a Mass Fatality Event – This ain’t no CSI! (447-999-08-007-LO4-P) - Rick Sywassink -  Public Safety Consultant
In a suspected or known bioterrorism incident, what is evidence? How should health care workers, responders, or others handle, package and disposition evidence in order to preserve the integrity of the evidence?  This session will answer those questions and provide practical guidelines.

It’s every person’s nightmare – You are sitting with a group of people, sharing stories.  You have a great story to tell, and are going to great lengths to make it interesting.  A few minutes into your story, you discover that nobody’s really listening.   What now?
Communicating vital information will become critical in a public health emergency.  Whether you are lecturing to students or providing health tips to the community – you want to make sure people remember what they have learned.  The participant will identify how learners learn, and how to share information in a way that allows the learner to recall the information at a later date.

The I-80 corridor and busy rail lines crossing Nebraska include a variety of chemicals and other hazardous materials being transported across the state. What's on those trucks and trains? What are the hazards? And what should those involved in preparedness, response and recovery know?

EMS responders are known for being prepared, ready to take on worst case scenarios that they know happen all too frequently.  But how do we sort out the maze that is pandemic preparedness?  The participant will be given resources and guidelines to help prepare Pre-Hospital providers with the knowledge to begin their pan flu preparedness planning.

Recovery takes time. Learn what was done in Hallam, Nebraska to help residents recover over the long term after the devastating F4 tornado that struck the town in May 2004.

Animals are often the "forgotten victims" in disasters.  Thoughtful planning and preparation by animal owners, as well as local and state entities can help mitigate the effects of natural or man-made disasters on pets and livestock.  This presentation will highlight some of the challenges in caring for the animals affected by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  Federal, state and local officials established the largest sheltering effort and veterinary field hospital in the aftermath of Katrina at Lamar-Dixon Equine Expo in Gonzales, LA. eventually caring for 8000+ animals in the course of 6 weeks.

The global AIDS epidemic has facilitated the spread of TB, and extensively drug resistant TB is increasing worldwide.  The incident of the careless  international traveler with drug-resistant TB who flew to Europe in 2007 raises public health issues.  A case presentation format is used to highlight medical, public health and legal issues in dealing with XDRTB. 

Hospital & Transport Care Of The Highly Infectious Patient (This session will be repeated at 3:15) (447-999-08-011-L04-P) - Beth Beam RN, MSN – HEROES Project Coordinator, UNMC College of Nursing
It's not every day a patient presents with a dangerous, highly infectious disease. In Nebraska, healthcare providers have access to the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit for specialized care. However, they need to understand methods of containment and how to prepare the patient for transport to the Unit. In this session, simulators will be used to engage learners in critical thinking, and students will identify online resources at www.onlineheroes.org.

 Local emergency managers along with hospitals and public health must make decisions about involving behavioral health responders after an event. This session provides the audience with practical information related to when and how to activate behavioral health. It includes information about common psychological reactions to disaster, what to expect from behavioral health responders in the first 72 hours after an event, and how to activate local, regional and state behavioral health resources if needed. This session will include discussion about the type of credentials and agreements that need to be in place locally before behavioral health responders can serve in hospitals, shelters or other special environments.

The ACPE provider numbers for dates April 16 through July 10th, 2008 are posted next to each CE session. Participants will be awarded 1 contact hour of continuing education or 0.10 CEUs for completion of each CE session. In order to receive CE credit, participants must complete all speaker evaluation forms. No partial credit will be awarded. Statement of Credit will be distributed to participants the day of the conference.
